Representative Dina Titus introduces H.R. 10834: Gas Money Saved Act
Investivoq LegislationRadar
We have received text from H.R. 10834: Gas Money Saved Act. This bill was received on 2026-10-15, and currently has 4 cosponsors.
Here is a short summary of the bill:
This bill would direct the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to review federal fuel economy rules for cars and light trucks if gasoline prices rise much faster than inflation.
What would trigger a review
If, over a period of at least 180 days, national average gasoline prices increase at least five times faster than overall inflation, NHTSA would have to begin a process to reconsider whether the current corporate average fuel economy, or CAFE, standards are still achieving the highest fuel economy that is feasible for manufacturers.
This review would be triggered using data published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
When the review could happen
The bill would allow this trigger to be checked:
- Once, for the first eligible 180-day period after the law takes effect; and
- Again after any later 180-day period if a previous review has already been triggered under this section.
Fuel economy penalty changes
The bill would also restore monetary penalties for not meeting CAFE standards. Specifically, it would change the current penalty amounts from $0.00 to:
- $25 in one part of the law; and
- $50 in another part of the law.
These penalties apply under federal fuel economy law when manufacturers do not meet required average fuel economy levels.
Practical effect
In simple terms, the bill would create a way for fuel economy rules to be revisited during periods when gas prices are rising unusually fast, and it would bring back federal penalties for failing to meet those fuel economy standards.
